Over 700 friends and colleagues attending the commemorative service is a measure of how John was respected in the golfing and business world.

For Staffordshire golfers he is best remembered as being the youngest winner of the Amateur Championship played at Troon in 1956; an honour he retained until the younger Italian Manassero won in 2009.

John represented his country at both junior and senior level, was captain of Staffordshire in 1969/70.  Winner of the Legge Trophy in 1955 awarded for the best net score at the Staffordshire Amateur Championship.

After retiring in 1990, John went on to win the Staffordshire Seniors Matchplay Championship, on no less than three occasions.

John will be sadly missed - may he rest in peace.
