Amateur Championship at Penn G.C.



Ken Skitt, the Captain of Penn Golf Club welcomes the players and visitors to the Staffordshire Amateur Championship played over over 36 holes at Penn Golf Club on Saturday 23rd May, 2009.

Captains of affiliated golf clubs were invited to be guests of the County Golf Union, at a luncheon at Penn Golf Club, in recognition of their support for County Golf.

The President of the Union, Professor David Thomas, thanked the Club Captain on behalf of the Union for hosting the 2009 Amateur Championship and said how important it is for the Union to have the support of Staffordshire Clubs.  He especially thanked Penn G.C. for the excellent quality of the course and the catering and thanked the management for their continued support.

The President stressed the importance of the Junior Coaching Programme and thanked Clubs for their efforts which have produced such outstanding talent as David Lynn,Robert Rock, and Simon Wakefield.

He also commented that Staffordshire was bucking the national declining trend in the number of golf club members but stressed that there will be difficult times ahead for many Staffordshire Clubs and the Union is working to help with these difficulties.

Mention was made of the launch of the new web site and the County Card Scheme, both of which are now fully operational. Re-assessment of Standard Scratch Scores is ongoing.

The President thanked Martin Payne, the Union Secretary, for his efficient organisation of the day and for all his work throughout the years.
