Match v Shropshire & Hereford

Staffordshire1st Team v Shropshire & Herefordshire

Date: Sunday July 4th 2010

Venue: Wolstanton Golf Club

Captain: Dean Porter

Captains Report

A very windy day at Wolstanton proved to be my first victory as first team captain, after witnessing our narrow loss at Copt Heath last month I decided that the team needed a bit of a boost...So I picked myself which proved to be the right choice as my match was the result that sealed victory.......only joking!!!

The morning foursomes finished even 2.5 / 2.5 with wins for Jason Timmis & Dave Walley, Richard Prophet & Kurt Bridgen and a half for the old men at the end myself & Tony Cheese.

Looking at the morning results, the heaviest defeat got the short straw and was put out No.1 and the plan look to have back fired as Andy Guy was 4 down after 5 but a bit of Dunkirk Spirit he pulled it back and won 3 & 1 next followed wins for Dave Walley, Neil Wain, Richard Prophet, Aron Wright which left my match needing at least a half (2 up with 3 to play); a birdie at 16 was enough to seal victory for Staffordshire.

I would like to thank the President who was there from start to finish and to my players for our first victory. Well Done team

Result -  Staffordshire 8.5    Shropshire & Herefordshire 6.5

Staffordshire 2nd Team v Shropshire & Herefordshire

Date: Sunday July 4th 2010

Venue: Henlle Golf Club

Captain: Kevin Beattie

Captains Report

The second match of the 2010 season was held at Henlle Golf Club in Oswestry on a very blustery and cloudy morning. There was a return to the county scene for John Kendall and second team debut for 14 year old Danny Woodcock of Trentham Golf Club.

In the morning foursomes it was rather a battle against the conditions than one against the opponents and my pre-match team talk must have done some good as there were wins for John Haynes and James Willis, Martin Crook & Craig Ingram, Kevin Beattie & Danny Woodcock and a half for Chris Crane & Chris Bradshaw. This saw Staffordshire return with a 3.5 to 2.5 lead at lunchtime.

The afternoon started with the wind still persisting and horizontal rain to go along with it but the team put in a rousing performance with particular emphasis on John Kendall?s return with a 6 & 5 win and Danny Woodcock winning on debut by 1 hole.
At one point in the afternoon I was fed information from  President Elect Mr Jim Whitehouse that it was looking particularly close as the matches were going through his vantage point at the 12th tee.

However, as the sun eventually broke through late in to the afternoon with it came some excellent points that secured Staffordshire a resounding 9.5 to 2.5 victory in the singles and an overall victory by 13 to 5.

Result -  Shropshire & Herefordshire 5, Staffordshire 13.
